Upcycling

According to Wikipedia, ”Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value.”

I love trying to think of ways to use what would otherwise be waste for something useful.  I’ve seen a lot of uses on pinterest.com for toilet paper rolls lately and I think that’s great. There are some beautiful things made with them like this…..

See? I love that!

So anyway, I was trying to get ride of some clutter and I was thinking… What can you make with old CD’s?  I also had a stack of old magazines that I hated to just waste.

Here’s what I did.  I found a page in a magazine with some pretty flowers and traced around the CD with a fine tip marker.

Cut out the circle staying on the inside of the line you traced.

Then look through the magazine for words or letters that you can add to the picture.  There are so many things you can do.  You can also cut rectangles out of colored sections to “frame” the text you want to use.

I used a glue stick to position them on my background piece.

After I had that finished I used a flat paint brush and applied a thin layer of Mod Podge to the CD.  I carefully positioned the circle of paper to the cd trying to push out wrinkles and air bubbles.  You need to try to avoid the center area where there is a hole in the CD.  You don’t want to push through the paper that is softened by the mod podge.  After that has dried brush a layer of Mod Podge over the top and if you want you can touch a bit to the back where the hole is to strengthen it.  Once that is dry you can embellish with some paint or markers, stickers, etc and then add another layer of mod podge to seal it.  No need to worry about newspaper to cover the table.  Just use the magazine.  I also found that glossy magazine pages are great for mixing paint on.  Use Super glue or hot glue to add a magnet to the back of your CD.  There are so many things you can do!  Paint the CD with chalk board paint or glue a paper pocket for holding  coupons or other things you want to remember.  You could even take a large paperclip and bend the top out at slight angel in the middle.  Use hot glue to add it to the back for a wall hanger.

Add a quote you like or a motto to help you through a challenge like weight loss.  The refrigerator is a great place for a reminder if you are trying to eat healthier.

I found another useful idea too.   I made this so my kids will know when the dishwasher needs to be emptied and when they can put their dirty dishes in the dishwasher instead of filling up the sink.

I blotted orange and gold acrylic paint around the edges to give it a boarder.  After that dried I added another coat of modge podge to seal it.  I also used a nail file on the edge once it was dry to get rid of any overlapping paper.

The word “Clean” was right on the cover of a Real Simple magazine so that was easy.  At first I was really frustrated trying to find the word “dirty” or letters that looked good together.  I really wanted the font to be the same.  I thought I was going to have to print something and then I found the phase “dinner party” in the same magazine.  All I had to do was snip the parts I wanted and paste them together.

What have you upcycled?

diet riot

okay, I fell off the wagon and gained some weight back.  I feel like crying.  I haven’t been logging to my weight watchers online log.  I haven’t exercised for a couple of weeks and yeah, it shows.  I have gained about 4 lbs back!  I’m so angry at myself!!!!!!!!!!!  But anyway, I’m going to get back to doing what I should have been doing and logging to WW and exercising again.  I can do it….

Week 12 on Weight Watchers

I lost 1 whole pound this time instead little tiny bits!  So now my total weight loss since new years day is 13.8!  I’m getting really close to losing 10% of my beginning weight and I’m feeling so much better.  My belly is very noticably smaller and I am looking toned especially in my legs.  I have primarily been doing “my fitness coach” for the wii.  It’s like working out with a workout DVD that you can customize for you!  I love it!

I’ll work on getting some new pictures towards the end of this week.

Week 11 on Weight Watchers

Well, things didn’t go as I had hoped.  I have been sick to my stomach for the past week.  Heart burrrrn and cramping and nausea oh my……    I did pretty good keeping up with my exercise routine all week and even exercised an extra day.  I just took it easy during exercise when I wasn’t feeling well.  I would do flexibility exercises with the Wii “my fitness coach” instead off jumping around when my stomach was on fire.  I finally am starting to feel better.  This time I am amazed that I didn’t lose more weight because I’ve been eating like a prisoner — bread and water.  Well, we all know prisoners in the good old USA are eating better than most these days but you get what I mean.  I only lost .2 lbs.  That brings my total weight loss since Jan 1st to 12.8 lbs.  Like I said last week, at least I’m still going down.

Goal: I will continue my exercise routine as last week and focus on drinking plenty of water.

Week 10 on Weight Watchers

My weight loss has slowed to a crawl but at least it’s still moving downward. I am amazed each week when I weigh in that I actually lose some weight. I have been sick in some form or another or taking care of my sick family for a while now. The crud is really going around. So, my workouts became pretty spotty for a while. Also, my modem died so I wasn’t able to log my food into my online weight watchers for a few days. I still ate well but not as well as I should have. I have been more susceptible to temptations lately too. Yesterday someone brought doughnuts in to work and since it was a very busy day and I didn’t get time to eat until late I ended up eating 2 of them! UGH! So I had veggies for dinner, drank lots of water, and doubled my exercise time doing more cardio than anything. I guess it paid off because I lost .8 lbs bringing my total weight loss to 12.6 lbs since new years.

My goal for this next week is to really make exercise a priority focusing on upper body and cardio. I want to lose at least 1.5 lbs.

weight watchers and valentines day

This is week 7 and I didn’t lose or gain which is fine with me.  I wasn’t feeling very well for the past week so I didn’t exercise at all.  I didn’t log what I ate either, although I probably didn’t eat a whole lot.  So, I am still at a total loss of 10.8 lbs.

I have set a goal to lose 2 lbs over the next week.  I am going to be very careful with my food choices and log EVERYTHING!  I also set a goal to workout at least 30 minutes every day this next week.  My husband bought me My fitness Coach for the wii for valentines day and I think she [the coach] just kicked my butt!!!!!!  I did the initial assessment and found out that my upper body strength is about the same as it was when I was 18 months old.  She [coach] suggests I LOSE WEIGHT (duh!) and work on my upper body strength.  Hopefully I wont feel like gumbi by the end of the week.

I just wanted to add that my husband bought My fitness coach because I’ve been saying I wanted it for over a month.  He is afraid my friends might think he was an ass for buying that for me for valentines day.  He’s not an ass; He’s my sweetie!  We started this day early by going to Denny’s for strawberry covered waffles (one of my favs) and then he took me to several bead stores around town that I looked up in the yellow pages.  He was very patient as we tied to located each one…..including the one that apparently doesn’t exist.  He also bought me a very pretty necklace with matching earrings that look like plumeria flowers with rubbies set in the centers AND this cool watch I had to have that is made of wood.  The watch may not sound cool but it’s awesome.   Then toss in the wii game……. and he’s a darn cool guy.  I’ll keep him.  I can’t really go into what I got for him….. this is a family blog!

Week 5 on Weight Watchers

Well I had another good week.  I lost 1.4 lbs!  That brings my total lost since the 1st of the year to 10.2 lbs!  I have really been watching what I eat and sticking to my points.  There were only a few days when I went over but not much.  I have still been using my Wii fit but now I’m started adding in more of the strength training  too.  I discovered that although my legs are getting stronger with the yoga my arms are not.  I tried to do this exercise where you do a push-up and then a side plank…….then a push-up and side plank to the other side.  I could barely do the first push-up and side plank and then trying to do the next I fell on my butt!!!!!!  Then at the end my sweet little Wii fit trainer said “I noticed you took a break during that exercise” and I got 0 points!  UGH!  That’s just not nice.  So anyway, I started working more on my arms to tone them up.  The last time I tired the push-ups I kept my knees on the floor although that makes it more tricky to do the side planks.  At least I got some points though.  I’ll get better I’m sure.

My beginning belly dancing class was today and I just feel so much more toned especially in my abdomin.  I’m getting better slowly.  I think the Wii fit balance training is helping me in my dance class too.  My posture is so much better and I’m not always losing my balance or stumbling.

Week 4 on Weight Watchers

I met my first goal!!!!!!!!  I have lost 5% of my original body weight.  I am 8.8 lbs lighter!  Now I’m going for my next 5% which is somewhere around 157 lbs.  I really want to get into some smaller jeans.

I am really glad I finally joined Weight Watchers.  Of course I think the Wii fit is also part of my success.  I love doing the yoga.  The last pose seemed so impossible to me.  I think it’s called the shoulder stand – where you use your abs to lift your legs over your head.  Well I finally did it this past week!  I was so excited I almost fell and broke my neck.

Well, wish me luck getting to 10%!

Week two on Weight Watchers

I lost another 1/2 lb.  That’s not too bad.  I also bought a wiifit and now I’m addicted to it.  I’ve never had so much fun exercising!  I just wish the sun would come out and the temperatures would warm up a bit.  I think I’m getting SAD!  It’s been -40 something for quite a while now and I feel out of sorts.  Singing….. “the sun’ll come up…. tomorrow….. uh……. in Maaaaarch.”

ediets

I just checked in for my 3rd week and I’ve now lost a total of 5 pounds.  I’m so excited!  It’s nice to see this diet is working.  I can’t wait until I can start trying on clothes I have arranged in my closet by size.  I’ll slowly work my way back down to where I want to be and then I’m going shopping!  Woo-hoo!

Well, I rewarded myself with a Reeses so now I have to go work that off LOL
