Return to Downton Abbey

“Of course it would happen to a foreigner. No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else’s house.”  Lady Grantham, the Dowager Countess

I am so addicted to this show and I only just heard about it.  A friend of mine was hosting a Masterpiece classic Downton Abbey premier party and invited me.  I almost never watch TV so of course I had never heard of it.  I looked it up on netflix Friday and watched all of season 1 that night.  Then, of course, I was freaking out because I couldn’t find season 2 other than on iTunes for $3 an episode.  Sorry, but if I’m going to pay that much I’d want a DVD. There are 9 episodes in season 2.  I might just get the DVD’s later because this is a show I will most likely want to watch again. Once you get started on this family you wont be able to quit watching.

“No one ever tells you about raising daughters. You think it’ll be like Little Women, and instead they’re at each others’ throats.” Cora, the Countess of Grantham and mother of Mary, Edith & Sybil

Well, a friend told me last nigh that you can watch it on Amazon Prime for free.  My son has Amazon Prime on his new Kindle so I used that to watch season 2.  I was up all night since I couldn’t resist hitting “next episode” to find out what happened next.  Both season’s 1 & 2 are available on Amazon Prime and they have the original uncut version.

Lady Edith: (in reference to Lary Mary’s beau) “So he slipped the hook”

Lady Mary: “At least I’m not fishing with no bait”

It really is such a great show.  I love learning about different time periods and how different things where then.  During the show they get electric lights put in and then a telephone although not everyone was ready for the changes.

“Sometimes I feel as if I were living in an H.G. Wells novel.” Lady Grantham, the Dowager Countess

My favorite character is Lady Sybil Crawley.  She is so genuine and I really admire her strength of character and caring spirit.  She pushes her parents to allow her to take a nursing class so she can help in the hospitals with the care of the wounded soldiers.  She falls in love with someone her parents don’t approve up but she wont be moved.

“No one ever learned anything from a governess except for French, and how to curtsy.” Lady Sybil Crawley

Things were so different then and the women’s rights movement was just beginning.  Lady Sybil of course was interested in this and wanted to go to the rallies.

Lady Mary Crawley: “Sybil is entitled to her opinions.”

Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham:“No. She isn’t until she is married, then her husband will tell her what her opinions are.”

This show has had me smiling at touching moments, laughing, crying, and hand-over-mouth in shock.  Occasionally I had to pause the show because I had to digest some of the emotion I was feeling.  Some of the best moments come from the staff.  There are some very touching moments between Lady Mary (the eldest daughter) and Carson the butler.  He watched her grown from a little girl into a young woman and has a special spot in his heart for her.

(to Daisy, the kichen maid) “Daisy, what’s happened to you? I said you could go for a drink of water, not a trip up the Nile.” Mrs Patmore, Cook

The viewing party ended up being canceled due to illness but I was resting up from my marathon watching session anyway. I will watch the season 3 premier episode at 2am instead!

I got all my quotes from Sylist.co.uk

I just started using Spotify and I love it.  It is a music player that lets you search and select songs and make playlists.  There is a free version or you can subscribe for a fee to avoid advertisements.   I love how it can connect with facebook so I can share songs, albums or playlists I like with friends.  I was worried it wasn’t legal at first but then I read more about it and found out it is supported by major record companies.  Apparently, every time I listen to a song the artist gets paid.  My son was trying to explain to me that Spotify is a “peer to peer” network but I had to look up this webpage for a better explanation on what that was.  This page is called “how Spotify works for Dummies” and it explains it really well.  It just makes it easier for you to get your music quicker and without delays.

The only problem I had using Spotify was resolved with a little tinkering.  I could listen to a song and a few seconds of the next and then silence…… I would get this annoying error displayed across the top in yellow “There was a problem storing temp files on the hard disk,  Maybe the hard disk is full”.  Well I know I don’t have much space on my C drive and that is why I have an external hard drive that I use for most everything.  I use chrome though so I had to figure out where my temporary files were being stored and see about moving that folder to my external drive.  I watched this video on youtube that explains how to change the location.

He does have a bit of an accent but I figured it out and it works!  I did have to restart my computer first but now I don’t have any problems at all.  You can also go to Edit – Preferences and then change the setting for “cache”.  I have mine set to use no more than 10% of free disk space.

Spotify is very much like itunes except you don’t have to buy the songs.  Most of the time I still do go and buy the song so I can add it to my mp3 player.  That makes me feel better, especially since I like supporting new artists.

I’d love to hear if you have any opinions, concerns or thoughts about Spotify.  I am just curious- I don’t work for them or anything LOL

Easy Saturday’s at home

Sometimes the best thing to do on a cold Saturday is to snuggle in and take it easy.  I tinkered around some but mostly I listened to music.  I’m still organizing my itunes.  After my other laptop died my husband put all of our music together (to avoid duplicates) and then he set up my new (to me) laptop with itunes and dumped it ALL in.  It’s all in a shared holder on another hard drive so if the wireless cuts out my music stops working.  Anyway, I have every song everyone in the house has downloaded or uploaded- EVER!  Many of the songs are from CD’s we had.  He copied them all to itunes so we wouldn’t need the CD’s (or a player) unless we lost our music on the computers.  Well, I don’t like having all of this extra music and all the crazy genres!  That is my biggest pet peeve… there are so many different genres that the music is all over the place.  Half will be labeled one thing and have another so sometimes I buy a song thinking I don’t have it.  ERrrgh!  So I’ve been sorting and putting things back in order (my order).  I’ve deleted a lot of crap too.  I can’t imagine how anyone could consider screaming music.  It makes me wonder how they even know what the lyrics are or even what song they are listening to.  Hmmm… things to ponder.  Or not.  I just deleted it.

Yesterday and today I have been listening to some old rock music.  Some people (who live here but who shall remain un-named) like to label it as classic rock, old rock, soft rock, other, a very descriptive “genre” or oldies.  As I see it, if I remember the song it cannot be considered an “oldie” or “classic”.  If I live to be 100 maybe but not just yet.  I prefer to label music as the genre it is or was at the time.  I have smart playlists set up in iTunes to sort music by dates depending on the decade and then from there I can sort by genre.  That makes “the best of” albums a pain in the keester.  I have been looking up the actual dates for each song so they go where they should.

Anyhoo, yesterday I listened to the Beatles all day.  I forgot how much I loved their music!  Hey Jude is one of my favorites.

This is a song I had started to learn on the guitar and it makes me want to get it out and try again.  I do have more time now and a really nice guitar that deserves to be played more than dusted.

Today I listened to a little Jimi Hendrix and a lot of Eric Clapton and Cream.  I have to admit that some of this music is actually older than I am but I still love it.  I think once you label something “classic” it gets shelved and listened to less.  I really think we should take another look at what we used to call music and compare it to what we have today.  It is sounding a lot less like music to me!

How about a little “sunshine of your love?”  I love listening to the guitar music in this.

Here is another good one

How sad that such a wonderfully talented musician died at such a young age!  27 I think…..  That happens way too often.

I would have liked to meet that guy and shake his talented hand.  Maybe some of it would rub off on me.  😉

Have a wonderful restful right and beautiful Sunday!

I’ve been busy

I feel better then I did yesterday so I’ve been into all kinds of things.  I had a little fun taking a picture for my 365 project.  I was cleaning off the chessboard and decided to create a little royal trouble.

The Queen with the wrong King on 365 Project

As you can see the white queen is seen with the wrong king…. by the white king himself.  He is not happy and I wouldn’t be surprised if she doesn’t get locked in the royal dungeon.  I used the camera+ ap on my iphone and it has some neat effects.

I also created a facebook page and I’m going to be posting paintings and things that I’ve knit, crocheted or tatted.  If you trade ATC cards let me know there too.  I’d be happy to do some trading.  I’ll be posting some of my cards there too.  Hopefully I can make a little money by selling some things and make some new friends along the way.  I haven’t posted anything yet.  That will take a little time.  If you look on the side bar there is a like me box.  So far I am not feeling the love *pout*  so please hit that “like” button.

I also added a goodreads.com widget to my side bar.  I’ve never seen that widget before.  Now you can see what I’m reading and just how slow I’m going.  The thing I like the most about goodreads is that I can post a quote I like on the page it is located.  Then when someone looks up that book they see those quotes.

Okay, so the NaBloPoMo blog prompt for today is an interesting one.

What is your earliest memory?

For the longest time I thought I was having a reoccurring dream.  At first I just got this quick glimpse of a house…. sometimes I saw an old truck loaded up with stuff…… and a little people chicken far below the porch beyond reach.  I could see it through the spaces in the porch.  These quick glimpses came to me every now and then and usually I felt terribly upset like I wanted to cry but it wasn’t like a movie…. it was more like photographs.  I always woke up wondering what that was about because it wasn’t like a normal dream. Then one night I saw more of it and it was more connected….. and I heard my sister yelling my name….. she yelled “Donna, come one! Get in the truck!”  So I called my sister and she told me that it was a memory and not a dream.  She said  I was 3 years old and that was my (maternal) grandma’s house.   She said I carried that chicken around all the time and dropped it and it went between the boards of the porch into the chicken coop below.  No was going to go get it cause it was stinky and they were in the truck all ready to go.  I just kept crying and didn’t want to go without my chicken.  After my sister explained this I started to see more of it but it was still like still scenes.  This probably explains why I never wanted to share the chicken when I was in preschool/kindergarten.

Okay, one last thing.  Did you know you can get a free song by The Band Perry through itunes by checking out this link?  I just downloaded it and it is the song called All Your Life from their current album named after themselves.  I gave it 4 stars :O)

It’s only -26 F outside right now…  brrr.  I actually went outside for a minute because I really wanted to take a good picture for my picture project.  I bundled up in my huge puppy parka and probably looked like a freak outside in my furry hooded parka, pink pajama pants and fuzzy black house slippers.  I took several pictures but the sky is really kinda grey and clouded over.  I ended up using this one…  I really like the wood grain.  It’s not a bad picture considering I used my iphone.

Fence post on 365 Project

The first thing on my new years list that I’ve been really focusing on  is sorting through my music.  I’m going through my itunes list.  My husband has the whole house networked and moved everyone’s music into one place.  My last computer suddenly fried so when he set up my itunes on this one he dumped ALLLLLLLL of the music into it.  Many of the files are duplicated….sometimes 3 or 4 times.  Now I know that means that there are probably duplicate FILES that are taking up space but I’m not taking that on right now.  I’m just trying to put some order to my music, get rid of all the crappy music I didn’t download and change all the genre’s to what I like them to be.  I don’t need 500 different genres.  It’s actually been fun listing to music the past several days…..except for when I’ve spaced out and not really been listening for the last  hour or so and have to go back.   I’ve deleted a lot already and I’ve found some damaged files.  I have learned that I really detest R&B but that I just can’t delete Alicia Keys.   I just wonder who downloaded that if I didn’t hmmmmm?   I’ve also been going through paper stuff still.  I ended up taking a huge siesta yesterday and not finishing.  I need to get my table back.

I did start reading a book.  One of the things on my list is to read one book that I already have every month and to then part with said book.  I’m reading The Chase by Clive Cussler.  A friend of mine was reading some of his books and commented in goodreads.com how great they were.  I checked them out and they look really good….all of them.  I have this crazy hang up that I can’t read a book out of order even if the books don’t have to be read in order like these.  I also want to have every book in a series before I start.  In the case of Clive Cussler he has several different series that all look good so I have been hording his books trying to complete the entire collection before I start reading.  So I have this copy paper box full of his books and I still don’t have them all because I’m broke and buying them all second hand.  The first book I grabbed was actually “The Wrecker”.  It has a really interesting cover and I thought it was the first in that series.  I grabbed it and a cup of tea and ran a hot bath.  I got cozy and opened the book and read the quick synopsis on the first page.  Then, right below that was this reviewer saying the previous book was really good.  UGH, I got the wrong book.  I tried to talk myself into reading it anyway since everyone has told me they can be read in any order but no….  I had to get up, grab my robe and find the right book.  So far The Chase is looking really good.

My journal isn’t finished yet because I need my table.  I have pieces and parts and really want to work on it.  I’ve got a lot to do.  It’s a good thing I have a whole year.
